What’s Your Water
Quality? |
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
|
Most of the time the
water is just fine,
but not all of the
time. While talking
about contaminants,
it’s important to
clarify that not all
tap water contains
contaminants, and
the contaminants
explained below
aren’t necessary in
your drinking water.
But there is a broad
range of
contaminants which
have the potential
to occur in drinking
water. These
contaminants fall
into three main
groups:
|
|
1. Organic
Chemicals –
Disinfection
By-Products
Depending on the
disinfection method
used (chlorine,
chloramines,
bromine, ozone) and
the chemical
composition of the
treated water, it’s
possible for many
different organic
chemical products to
form in drinking
water. The ones that
are currently
causing the most
concerns are called
trihalomethanes, or
THMs. These
chemicals are formed
when free chlorine
combines with
organic matters in
water. The most
common THM is
chloroform.
|
2.
Microbiological
In 1993, the
municipal water
supply of Milwaukee
became contaminated
with
cryptosporidium, a
parasitic,
single-cell
microorganism that
lives in the
intestines of
animals. The Centers
for Disease Control
estimated over
400,000 people
suffered from
gastrointestinal
discomfort, and over
10,000 were
hospitalized. 1
In 2004, Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia
(UKM) researchers in
their expedition to
Tasik Chini in
Pahang, the
second-largest
freshwater lake,
found high levels of
e-coli, salmonella
and other bacteria,
collectively known
as coliform in the
lake and ground
water.
|
The
team found the e-coli
counts in wells in two
nearby orang asli
villages where 20,000
and 2,000 per hundred
millimeter (phm)
respectively, when the
e-coli count in drinking
water should be zero.
Coliform was found at
different locations
within the lake, with
the highest amount being
detected in the middle
of the stagnant body of
water – 56 times above
the permissible level of
5,000 phm, a standard
set by the Department of
Environment.2
While this level of
contamination is highly
unusual, this history
shows that it CAN
happen. What’s more, the
struggle to control
cryptosporidium and
other bacteria has
become even more
complicated now that
it’s known that
increasing chlorine
poses its own problems.
|
|
3. Inorganics –
Lead and Copper
In 1993 the U.S. EPA
released a study
showing that over
800 cities serving
300 million people
had drinking water
supplies containing
unhealthy levels of
leads. 4 Lead
contamination
usually occurs where
lead pipes is used
to transport the
water to residences,
or where other metal
pipe such as copper
is fitted together
with a solder that
contains lead.
Copper can also
leeched out of
copper plumbing.
Brass fixtures, such
as hot and cold
faucets at the sink,
can also contribute
to the led content
of tap water.

A
Single 3-Stage
Microfiltration
Cartridge Does It All!
The 3-stage filter
cartridge includes
non-woven prefilter,
silver impregnated
activated carbon block
and polypropylene hollow
fiber. The properties of
carbon block provide for
removal of larger
particulates, cysts,
lead, volatile organic
compounds, and chlorine.
The 0.2 Micron Absolute
Hollow Fiber provides
fine particulate and
microbiological
reduction. |
